Red Cockaded Woodpecker
By Maddie
Imagine if you are a woodpecker, you’re gliding through the air, looking for food. You spot a tree that has millions of ants you go towards the tree and land on it. Suddenly the tree starts shaking and falling towards the ground. You try to fly but it’s useless. You know that it’s too late.
Habitat & Diet
Woodpeckers live in the Coastal Plains in Georgia. They live in a forest of longleaf pines, which a kind of pine tree. They eat bugs and insects that live on the pine trees, such as: ants, beetles, spiders, and worms. They also only seek out living pines with red heart disease. Red heart disease is a disease that pine trees can get. Since people are cutting down their trees the woodpeckers have less to eat.
How did it get its name
A cockade is a decoration of ribbon or ornaments worn on a hat in the 1800’s in france. According to National Geographic the red cockade is a red ribbon that matches the red streak on the male’s head. Both genders of the woodpecker have a black and white striped back.
Why they’re endangered
I bet you’re thinking “ Well, why do we need to help them, they’re just one species?” But there’s more to it than that. First of all, they are part of the food chain and if they die out, the animal that eats the woodpecker would die out too. Secondly, people are cutting down their habitat and messing up their nests. Sometimes when people cut down their trees, the nest ( that has a baby bird in it) will fall out of the tree and the baby bird will die. Third, not a lot of their trees are left and they cannot find a place to put their nest.
Human Help
Why we should help: First of all they are part of a food chain and if they die out the animal that eats the woodpecker would die out too and so on and so forth. How we can help: A few ways we can help are making signs and posters to stop cutting down trees and playing with nests. We could also help make a protection site where people are not allowed to cut down trees. What we have done to help already: There are many companies and nonprofits trying to help, such as U.S. fish and wildlife federation and many others. Many people want to help the woodpecker. Are you one of those people? The woodpeckers fate relies on you. Will you help an endangered species or will you leave them like they are? Will these rare creatures become common again? It is up to you. Imagine if you were the woodpecker. Now what would you do?
