Imagine a magnificent 100 foot tall green tree swaying back and forth. Then someone gets a chainsaw and cuts it down. Then another. This is what is happening to the Longleaf Pine Forest.
What is the Longleaf Pine Forest?
The Longleaf Pine Forest is a forest in Georgia. Longleaf pines get their name from there long leaves. The forest has lots of pines and is endangered. The Longleaf Pine Forest is a disturbance forest. Which means wind event including tornadoes and hurricane. Longleaf Pines capture carbon. According to Ryan Mitchell from the Longleaf Alliance, Longleaf Pines kill all of the bad plants. Without longleaf pines the nation is missing a really important resource.
Animals are going endangered because they are cutting down Longleaf Pines. Lots of animals including eastern Indigo snakes, Red Cocadadaded Woodpeckers and Gopher Tortoises are endangered. There are 26 other endangered species in the Longleaf Pine Forest . Exactly 315 red cocadadaded woodpeckers remain. People estimate 100 bird,36 mammal and 170 reptile and amphibian species remain. Nearly 900 plant species remain. If we cut down Longleaf Pines,Gopher Tortoises will die and they make burrows for other animals so they will die,too.
Human Impact on longleaf pines
People are cutting them down for tar and superior wood. They also are cutting them down for their agriculture and farming purpose. According to Ryan Mitchell from the Longleaf Alliance, Longleaf Pines are getting cut down for their timber and toilet paper and we already have that. They are getting replaced with shorter growing pines.
Longleaf Pine range
Only 2 million acres of Longleaf Pine Forest remains. Only 4 percent of the Longleaf Pine Forest remains. Now the Longleaf Pine Forest covers less than 3 percent of original range. The Longleaf Pine Forest once stretched 140,000 square miles.
Longleaf Pine recovery
Longleaf Pines are in terrible condition. The natural resources wildlife resources division has worked for 15 years to restore the Longleaf Pine Forest. It was hard for Longleaf Pines to recover because of bad fires. According to Ryan mitchell from the Longleaf Alliance that the Longleaf Alliance is planting more Longleaf Pines.
We can save Longleaf pines by planting more Longleaf pines in the Longleaf Pine Forest and Donate money to the Longleaf Alliance. Even if you do cut one down plant another one. Do something to help the Longleaf Pine Forest.
