The Pitcher Plant
By Henry W.
What is a pitcher plant?
You may be wondering, “What is a pitcher plant?” Well it is a carnivorous plant that eats bugs and insects. The pitcher plant is green. It can grow up to be 30 inches tall, as tall as a small bookshelf. The pitcher plant is narrow at the bottom and gets wider as it goes up. A flower grows from a tube that comes out of the pitcher plant’s stem which has a little disc in the middle, and the disc has a little fruit growing out it. The fruit is brown green.
How it eats
The pitcher plant has a liquid inside its body that lures bugs and insects to the pitcher plant. Then the bugs and insects fly into the pitcher plant’s body and lands on the inside. The bug can’t get out. Then the bug slips off the wall and lands in the chemicals. The chemicals that the pitcher plant have are the chemicals like we have in our stomachs. The chemicals dissolve the bug so the plant can “eat” it. After it “eats” the food goes up the tube and feeds the flower.
Why it is endangered
The pitcher plant is endangered. Why? Their habitat is being destroyed by humans mining for titanium that they use for making jet engines, missiles and spacecrafts. Their habitat is the Okefenokee Swamp and the Okefenokee is a good place to mine. The pitcher plant is also endangered by habitat loss and people taking them home and planting and selling them.
Conclusion
Now that you learned a lot about the pitcher plant, here is one thing that you can do prevent the pitcher plant from becoming endangered:
