In Spanish class, students learned about the life and work of César Chávez. We read the children's biography, Cosechando Esperanza, to learn how his life changed from living on a vast farm in Arizona, to life as a migrant farm worker in California, to his work as a organizer and fighter for worker's rights.
We also studied how he fought for people's rights and freedoms through the use of non-violent methods of protest mentioned throughout the book. We related this work to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as other historical figures that the students studied in 3rd grade, like Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass.
Furthermore, we learned about Teatro Campesino, or the Farm Worker's Theater, and the playwright Luis Valdez, a friend of César's that put on skits to get the message across to a larger audience. Each class put on a reader's theater skit in the style of Teatro Campesino! Enjoy!
