The Longleaf Pines

When a Fire Burns
Do you know what happens when a fire burns? A lot of people think that fire is bad for this forest, but the longleaf pine actually needs fire to survive because when the trees are small other plants choke the seedlings, but If a fire burns it will kill all the other plants. A seedling is a baby long leaf pine tree. There are needles on the seedling which protects them, but the taller and older trees have thick pine bark to protect them. The trees that are bigger and taller then the seedlings have a powerful root. It’s called a taproot. The taproot makes sure the tree does not fall down when a fire burns. The taproot can be 12 feet long maximum. That’s taller than some ceilings.

Why is the Longleaf Pine Endangered?
Do you know how to solve that question? I do and you will know lots of facts by the end of your journey in the longleaf pines. The first thing is that people are destroying animals homes and the trees. For example lumberjacks are cutting down trees to make things like chairs, pencils, and, shelves. Farmers have also been paying people to cut down trees for farms and homes. The Longleaf Alliance is a group of researchers and scientists that helps the longleaf pine forest. The longleaf pine trees are a very useful tree that we need for lots of things. When a tree gets cut down by the Longleaf Alliance they plant 8 or 4 more trees. So If you have a company or a group that uses the longleaf pines or If you know someone that does tell them to please do the same. I have one more reason not to cut so many trees down. We all need trees because trees breathe out oxygen and we breathe in oxygen. We breathe out carbon dioxide which means that trees breathe in carbon dioxide and so If we did not have trees we would not be here today. The longleaf pines can live 300 years to 500 years so that means that we will have lots of oxygen from just one tree. If we plant more trees we will have a lot more oxygen.

Animals in the Longleaf Pine Forest
Since the longleaf pine is endangered most of the animals are endangered too.Today they esimated about 100 birds, 36 mammals, 170 reptiles and amphibians. All of the animals that were listed are endangered just because of people. Everything that's alive has a purpose, but if we lost just one animal species It could change tons and tons of things and another animal species could die too. Do you want to help these animals? Do you want to help the trees? Do you want to help the Longleaf Pine Forest?
